ABOUT
A PRESENT FROM THE PAST
The façade of our 100-year-old building stands as a testament to respecting, protecting, and learning from the past. The original name Hovagimyan, etched above our entrance, made it difficult to call this place by any other name. Like our neighbouring ‘han’s – heritage trade buildings – Hovagimyan reflects Istanbul's rich maritime history, connecting its Ottoman legacy to the vibrant metropolis it is today.
We envision a world where progress respects history and believe thoughtful design can bridge past and present. Our design draws inspiration from the shimmering waters of the Golden Horn and the silhouette of the Galata Tower, both just a short walk from the hotel. Through our story-driven approach and personalised service, we invite each guest to become part of Hovagimyan's continuing story.
A Historic Approach to Hospitality
Explore Istanbul through the gaze of history.
The restored heritage building dates to 1920 and was designed by distinguished Armenian architect Leon Nafilyan. The Neo-Ottoman style architecture and İznik-style tiling on the façade make it a unique historic landmark that blends into the historic peninsula and Bosphorus. Each suite is designed with hand-picked Art Nouveau and Art Deco antiques and art from the collection of our founder.
Let our rooms transport you through time, feeling settled and serene in a bustling city.
Locatıng hovagımyan
Hovagimyan is in the heart of Karaköy, one of Istanbul's most notable waterfront districts. A place where cultures, commerce and community align, Istanbul’s layered history is made visible in this historic neighbourhood.
A short walking distance from the Galata Tower, the Golden Horn and Bosphorus waterfront. The area is filled with local designers, vintage and antique stores, unique cafes as well as fine-dining restaurants, luxury boutiques and renowned galleries. The access to private sea taxis and ferries also makes other Bosphorus attractions an enjoyable ride away, allowing you to take in the whole city from the sea. Our friendly team will help you with local favourites from our Hovagimyan City Guide to explore the best that the city has to offer.
A MULTICULTURAL GALATA
Istanbul’s iconic hans are more than business centers, they are part of a multicultural ecosystem in Galata, the hub of international trade networks, where Levantine, Greek, Armenian, Jewish and Turkish merchants and workers coexisted. Reflecting Istanbul’s cosmopolitan character, Galata is a place where many cultures coexist today. The city locals still discover new hidden gems in this part of town because there is always something to find nestled in the cobblestone streets.
FROM STEAMSHIPS TO SUITES
Nestled in the historic Kemankeş Karamustafapaşa neighbourhood of Karaköy, Hovagimyan Han is one of Galata's late 19th-century hans, once central to Istanbul's maritime trade. Over the years, it housed prominent international companies, including Albert Cabaud, Deutsche Levant Linie, and the Fascolo Mango Steamship Company, which specialised in coal shipments across the Mediterranean.
The Mango family's story is closely woven into the building's legacy. Following Dimitri Mango's arrival in Constantinople in the 1840s, future generations went on to shape both business and academia, including Byzantine scholar Cyril Mango and historian Andrew Mango – who wrote a biography of Atatürk.
Today, Hovagimyan Hotel and Suites honours this rich heritage through the thoughtful restoration of a historic building in the heart of Karaköy, offering guests an authentic stay immersed in Istanbul's cultural and maritime history.
An archıtect’s legacy
Designed by Armenian architect Leon Nafilyan, Hovagimyan reflects a distinctive blend of French Beaux-Arts training and Ottoman influences. Having studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Nafilyan was part of a generation of architects shaping Istanbul through international exchange. The building's ornamental details and İznik-style tiling reveal his unique architectural language. Today, these influences continue inside Hovagimyan through a curated collection of Art Nouveau and Art Deco antiques.
Beyond Istanbul, Nafilyan's work can be found in Cairo and Paris, including Saint Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Apostolic Church and the AGBU Nubar Library.
